KT:
so what first sparked your interest in music?
Ryan:
well it all started when I was quite young
KT:
what were you listening to at that time?
KT:
like what influenced you
Ryan:
Bruce Springsteen
KT:
any particular song by bruce?
Ryan:
well my parents were listening to the Born In The U.S.A. album, so that whole record, I loved the Boss back then and still admire his work today
KT:
good stuff
Ryan:
indeed it is
KT:
have you found that you have had other influences as you've been composing songs?
Ryan:
well I've listened to quite a few artists in my day, like everyone else I enjoyed Vanilla Ice, but he raps, then I moved on to the grunge movement and enjoyed Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and the like, then I found a band that I identified with when I was about 14 which is weezer, and they're my favorite, but I mean there's just so much music I enjoy. It's hard to pinpoint all of the influences, I mean I'm a huge Beatles fan, and I love Paul McCartney's solo stuff and Lennon's solo stuff, just a lot of music intrigues me
KT:
well i think it's good to have a well rounded bunch of influences and a wide collection of music.
KT:
What is your favorite song by the Weeze?
Ryan:
I'd have to lean toward Say It Ain't So, and only because it's one of the few songs I've ever heard that I still feel the same way today as when I first heard it, which shows that it's a timeless song
KT:
i'd have to agree that that is one of the best
KT:
when did you actually pick up a guitar to start learning and playin?
Ryan:
when I was 19
KT:
wow so you've come a long way in just a few years.
Ryan:
one might say
KT:
where has been your favorite venue to play?
Ryan:
well I haven't played a whole lot of places, but I'd have to go with the ampitheater at Fox Park because growing up I always wanted to play there and I had the opportunity to do so with my band, and it was a really good time the show altogether was super lame, but what can you do? it was fun
KT:
sounds like a good time...i'm glad you got to play somewhere you enjoyed...what about all those times at the frat house??
KT:
didn't enjoy those days??
Ryan:
most definitely, I wouldn't take any of those shows back ever because it was the dawning of an era pretty much, it was the first time I'd ever played a lot of the material that I had at that time and it brought people closer together into a group and it was just fun you know and a lot of the people that supported me then which was 3 years ago still support me now and have watched me grow as a musician and watched this evolution you know? They've seen the songs get stronger and the lyrics better and I wouldn't trade it for anything, I mean you have to start somewhere and I'm really thankful I got to start around a great group of people who have stuck by me and believed in me for this long and continue to do so
KT:
well it sounds like you have a great group of friends and your own fan club
KT:
so how did the shoeless joe band come about?
Ryan:
well it all started around the same time I started playing guitar...it was a little before actually. Mikey and I painted houses and talked about starting a band that was called Silent Fury, well we spent a lot of time in the talking stages, like years, 3 to be exact and well we recruited Mikey's cousin to play drums and his buddy to play bass, and that is the line up
KT:
well it sounds like things came together nicely for the band
KT:
what is this stud fieldmouse thing about then?
Ryan:
yeah we played out over the summer and such and had a really good time
KT:
do you got the word out a lil bit...good thinking
Ryan:
well Stud Fieldmouse is Shoeless Joe's acoustic side project...it all started when we were rehearsing for a show, and our drummer Nate couldn't be at the show until like 7:30 so Mikey, Kyle and myself decided to do an acoustic set and we called ourselves Stud Fieldmouse and we've been playing out a lot lately without Kyle because he's had some schedule conflicts that wouldn't allow him to play with us, and he doesn't appear on our EP either
KT:
oh ok. well it sounds like you guys have really got it all together?
KT:
so is shoeless joe going to be doing any record work over the christmas break?
Ryan:
well things are really up in the air with what we can do, I'd like to play a show with Shoeless Joe, but the thing is we're having a hard time finding a venue or even a place to play, so we'll see, I'd at least like to jam out with them if nothing else and then hit it full throttle in the summer of 2003
KT:
well it sounds like you need a booking agent
Ryan:
well we need a lot of things
KT:
yeah but you're just starting out and it sounds like things are coming together for the band and side project
KT:
i know it will all work out for you
Ryan:
hopefully it will, with fervent playing of shows and spreading the word it'll catch on somehow
KT:
yeah i definitely think so
